How To Prevent Summer Sun Spots

Freckles and sun spots are common occurrences on many people's skin, but you may want to keep your skin tone more even. Skin care can be complex and difficult, and summer will be here before you know it. GLOW Medical Spa wants to help. Here are some tips for your skin care regimen that will keep your complexion more even during these warmer months.

Sun Protection

Using sunscreen and limiting sun exposure are the two keys here. The more your skin and sun meet, the more the sun will illuminate sun spots. Sunscreen is an extremely important way to protect your skin, but what most people don't realize is that reapplying sunscreen every 90 minutes in a generous layer is more important. This is also a healthier choice for your skin than using a sunscreen with a higher SPF one time during the day. If you're trying to protect your skin but greasy sunblocks are interfering with your combination skin type, consider hats and sunglasses.

Keeping your skin from direct sun exposure is another safe bet. On the other hand, when your sun protection is ill-fitting (such as a tight band around the forehead or in between the eyes) it can actually make you hotter. When the temperature of the skin raises it causes a spike in melanin activity which creates your little problem spots. That's why you should also try to avoid being in the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when it's the brightest and hottest. Limiting sun exposure is the simplest method to avoid pigmentation damage, but not always doable. So if you're looking for ways to keep cool, remember to try these methods: splash ice water on the skin, apply frozen vegetables to the face, go for a swim, place a compress cold pack on the neck, and store your toner in the refrigerator.

Exfoliation

Exfoliating dead skin is the only way to truly get rid of existing spots of brown pigmentation. You should use a combination of acids and physical scrubs. Acid peels (lactic, malic, tartaric, glycolic, and salicylic) are good for dissolving brown pigmented cells that need a little extra help to remove. Combining your physical scrubs (such as mint scrubs, sugar scrub, and microdermabrasion) is how you'll loft away these troublesome cells. This method can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight so finding a facial lotion with sunblock is recommended, but unless you are actively tanning you should not have to worry about additional sun protection after exfoliating.
