Planning When to Do Your Breast Augmentation

Like any surgery, a recovery period is required after you have breast augmentation. That’s why planning is so important. You must factor in time for your body to heal.

So you can better time your surgery in its entirety, here are the steps usually involved in the process.

Start With a Consultation

The first step is a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon. He or she will discuss the procedure in detail and answer all your questions. You’ll discuss the implant size, type and incision location. Armed with this information, you can determine if you would like to proceed with the procedure.

Planning Time Off

You’ll need to plan for time away from work. If you don’t want to tell your coworkers about your surgery, tell them you’re taking a vacation. Or you can tell them you’re having surgery, but you don’t have to be specific. Most people won’t push to learn the details of your surgery if it’s clear you don’t want to talk about it.

Since you’ll need a week (or more) off work, it’s important that you plan your surgery for a slow period when you can afford to be away. You’ll also need to discuss with your employer regarding your time off. Will you take sick days? Vacation days? Will you need to file for FMLA time off work? If your work requires heavy lifting, you’ll also need to discuss your physical limitations upon returning to work.

Planning for Help

You’ll need someone to help you at home following surgery. This is especially true if you have young children as you won’t be able to pick them up. You will have restrictions on lifting your arms, heavy objects and vigorous exercise. You’ll also need someone to drive you to and from appointments as you won’t be able to drive if you’re taking narcotic pain relievers.

Planning for Seasons

If you want to be able to wear swimsuits and more revealing clothing in the summer months, schedule your surgery for the spring or winter. Your implants will need a period to “settle in.” Even after you’ve been cleared to return to work, your body will need a while to adjust to your new breasts. You’ll need several weeks before you’ll be comfortable showing off your new body.
