If you’ve spent years wearing loose-fitting clothing or dark shirts to conceal large, feminine breasts, you might want to consider male breast reduction surgery.
No amount of exercise or working out will eliminate excess breast tissue. Called gynecomastia, which is Greek for “woman-like breasts,” the problem is caused by an overabundance of hormones during puberty. It’s different from simply being overweight. Certain prescription medications and recreational drugs can exacerbate the problem.
Gynecomastia can be embarrassing, emotionally taxing and impair a man’s willingness to have intimate contact. It’s also quite common, affecting a large percentage of men at some point in their lives.
For years, men who wanted to conceal their chests had to resort to extreme measures at the expense of social and athletic endeavors. But now, surgery to correct the problem is becoming more widely accepted. In 2016, nearly 28,000 men had breast-reduction surgery, a 36 percent increase from 2000.
The surgery is minimally invasive, requires little downtime and the results are dramatic. The surgery can be done under local anesthesia and takes about an hour. Mild cases can be corrected through liposuction; more advanced cases will require surgical excision, skin tightening and possibly nipple repositioning. Scarring will be minimal, especially if liposuction is used to remove excess tissue.
The pectoral muscles will not be impacted, and following surgery these muscles can become more visible. Through diet and exercise after surgery, patients will be able to tone and strengthen their muscles as the chest regains its natural form.
