Looking Younger With Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgeryYou may blame the wrinkles and lines around your eyes and mouth for making you look years older than you actually feel. However, you may not realize that your eyes play a big role in how you appear to others. If your eyelids sag and look puffy, your entire appearance looks old and tired.

Fortunately, there's a relatively easy way to improve the appearance of your eyelids, helping you to look younger, fresher and more vibrant. An eyelid lift -- or blepharoplasty -- can help you look a decade younger.

Why do eyelids sag?

Over time, your eyelids begin to droop. Hereditary factors, gravity and weak muscles can cause both eyelids to sag and look puffy. As muscles and skin become more lax, the fatty deposits that surround the eyes look more pronounced. The deposits may appear as bulges under the eyes or extra folds above the eyes.

For most people, the problem is only cosmetic. For others, sagging eyelids can impair vision, making it difficult to see. In either circumstance, a blepharoplasty procedure, or eyelid lift, can correct the problem.

How is an eyelid lift performed?

While Botox can correct crows' feet on the outside of the eyes, an eyelid lift is the only way to achieve dramatic, long lasting results for the eyelids. During the surgical procedure, your cosmetic surgeon will trim excess skin and remove fat from the eyelids. The procedure takes an hour or two to complete, and you can have your upper, lower, or both upper and lower eyelids improved at the same time.

Following the outpatient procedure, you'll need to rest at home for a few days. However, recovery isn't difficult, and you should be able to resume normal activities within a week or so.

Am I a candidate?

As long as you're in good health, and you have sagging, puffy skin around the eyes, you may be a good candidate for blepharoplasty. Your cosmetic surgeon will need to know if you have significant allergies that affect your eyes, trouble wearing contacts, glaucoma, diabetes or thyroid issues before deciding if an eyelid lift is right for you.
