Traditional Breast Reduction Surgery for Woman

Breast reduction for womenBigger is not always better, especially when it comes to breasts.

Not only can large, heavy breasts be physically uncomfortable, but they may not be proportional to your body size. Large breasts often lack symmetry and may create a less-than-pleasing body contour.

Breast reduction surgery can help improve both the appearance and comfort of your breasts. The procedure leaves you with smaller, firmer and more lifted breasts. Your body's profile will be smoother, your clothes will fit better and being physically active will be a more enjoyable experience.

How is traditional breast reduction surgery done?

During breast reduction surgery, your cosmetic surgeon will make either two or three incisions on your breasts. One will be around the areolas. A second will be from the areolas to the crease. If necessary, a third incision will be made along the breast crease. The three-incision approach allows the surgeon to remove the most tissue and to correct asymmetry, if needed.

Fat, breast tissue and skin will be removed. If necessary, the areolas and nipples will be resized and moved to a higher, more prominent position on the breasts.

Will there be scarring?

Both surgical approaches will leave some scarring on your breasts. After the first year, the scars will fade considerably, and the position of the scars allow them to be easily covered with clothing or even a bikini top. There is no scarring on your cleavage.

What is recovery like?

Breast reduction surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure. You should expect to have some soreness and discomfort the first few days following surgery. Pain medication and ice packs will help alleviate discomfort. You'll likely be able to return to work after a week and can start exercising within a month.

Breast reduction surgery helps both your physical comfort and your emotional well-being. By reducing the size of large, sagging breasts, you reduce back, neck and shoulder pain as well as skin rashes and irritation. It also improves your self image and boosts your self confidence.

Many women suffer for years before opting for a surgical solution, and women who do choose to have breast reduction surgery are generally among the most satisfied cosmetic surgery patients.
