Discover Your Ideal Implant Size For Breast Augmentation

If you are considering breast augmentation, you probably have a general idea of the post-surgery results you desire. But most women find themselves less certain of their actual ideal breast size. Breast implants come in several shapes, and many sizes; it’s easy to become overwhelmed with the choices available.

Here are the things to focus on when it comes to finding your ideal implant size through breast augmentation:

Your current breast size

Believe it or not, your current breast size plays an important role in the size of implants that your chest can realistically support. The reason is that you need enough existing breast tissue to cover the implants once they are placed. A properly sized breast implant takes into account the amount of skin on either side of your breasts so that the implant does not distort your breasts or underfill the remaining tissue on each side. Equally important are the width of your chest and shoulders. Fortunately, most implants come in different base widths so you can still achieve volume without looking artificial.

The muscle mass in your chest

Based on your body composition, your surgeon will need to decide whether to place the implant under your muscle or over your muscle. Under-muscle placement is almost always recommended for a variety of reasons as most surgeons feel there is an increased risk of complications with above-muscle placement. In addition, placing breast implants under the muscle has better long-term cosmetic results than under-muscle placement. Rarely would a women have too much muscle mass or natural breast tissue for below muscle placement (e.g. professional weight lifter, competitive swimmer). Your surgeon’s decision on whether to place the implants under or over your muscles could influence the size that he or she ultimately recommends.

Silicone vs. saline implants

Choosing between silicone and saline breast implants is often one of the more difficult decisions in planning a breast augmentation surgery. Both can give a natural look and feel, but silicone implants more closely mimic the suppleness of natural breast tissue. Saline implants, on the other hand, can be filled with solution after they’ve been inserted, allowing for a smaller incision and less scarring. Saline implants may also be the ideal choice for you if your breasts are markedly asymmetrical.

With so many nuances to each option, it’s difficult to pinpoint your exact ideal breast size without an in-person consultation with your surgeon.
