Breast Augmentation: How To Know If You've Gone Too Big

Breast augmentation continues to be the top cosmetic procedure in the US year after year. Women who choose to have breast augmentation usually do so to enhance their current breast size, or to enlarge a breast that is smaller than the other. In addition to helping enhance a woman’s appearance, breast augmentation can help improve self-esteem and boost confidence. However, how big is considered too big when choosing a larger breast size?

Factors to consider when choosing a size

Since the general goal with breast augmentation is to go larger, some women lean toward choosing bigger implants than needed to avoid being disappointed after surgery if they realize they didn’t go quite big enough. After surgery has been completed and their bodies have fully healed, some women reveal that they wish they would have gone bigger. In other cases, some women are able to achieve their ideal look through augmentation, but want to go even bigger after having adjusted to their new, larger breast size. These decisions are often influenced partly by changes in fashion, trends, and pop-culture.

If you’re not sure how big to go with implants, the best thing you can do is talk to your cosmetic surgeon about your augmentation goals so they can make a professional, experienced recommendation based on your body type. Additionally, most cosmetic surgeons will allow you to test and try on different sizers to help you arrive at the best decision.

How big might be considered too big?

Since there is no one-size-fits-all approach to breast augmentation and cosmetic surgery in general, there is no one size considered “too big” for any patient. As a general rule of thumb, you may want to avoid getting implants big enough to hinder your ability to perform everyday activities. Implants that are too large for your frame may trigger problems with back, shoulder, and neck pain, and difficulty with finding clothes that fit properly. In some cases, overly-large breasts can also tend to become saggy down the road, which can be corrected through breast lift surgery. You may also want to avoid choosing implants that are so large that they alter the proportions of your body significantly enough to encourage everyone to talk about your augmentation surgery.

Lastly, take your hobbies, interests, and lifestyle habits into consideration when choosing implants. For example, are you an athlete who enjoys exercising regularly? If so, you may want to avoid going too big to avoid hindering your athletic performance.

On the other hand, if you’ve already had breast augmentation and feel that you may have gone too big, your cosmetic surgeon can disucss treatment options with you. In any case, regardless of the type of cosmetic changes you want done to your breasts, make an appointment with a cosmetic surgeon to discuss whether breast augmentation or breast reduction is ideal for you, and your body.
