Nighttime Skin Care Tips

Written by GLOW Surgical Arts | February 5, 2019

A good night's sleep helps replenish your mind and body, but while you are resting, your skin cells go to work. A 2015 study at the University of California Irvine found that new skin cells grow at a faster rate while you sleep. You can help this growth even more by following a good regimen of skin care. Your cosmetic professionals at GLOW Medical Spa are here to help, suggesting these tips you should follow when it comes to nighttime skin care.

Remove your makeup

It can feel pretty inconvenient to remove your foundation and mascara at the end of a long day, but this should be a crucial component of your nighttime routine. If you leave on makeup when you go to bed, it can mix with the dirt and oils that accumulated on your skin throughout the day and cause clogged pores—a common culprit behind breakouts and blackheads. We recommend you keep some makeup-removing wipes by your bed to make it easy to follow this step.

Don't forget the facial cleanser

Going to bed with clean skin helps keep your skin looking good. After removing makeup, using a facial cleanser will remove any other impurities on your skin before you lay down. Gently massage the facial cleanser into your skin, rinse well with lukewarm water, and then gently pat your face to dry it.

Use a peel pad

Formulated with glycolic acid, peel pads have a multi-ply texture that helps to remove any dead skin cells from the surface layer of your skin. After using these pads, your skin should look brighter right away. Use them consistently, and your skin will have a much more even look. Remember that glycolic acid can make you more sensitive to the sun, so be sure you make regular use of sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

No matter what your skin type might be, you should moisturize twice per day: once when you wake up, and once before you go to bed. For oily skin types, we recommend a water-based moisturizer. For sensitive skin, consider using a moisturizer that is fragrance-free, as any fragrance ingredient can aggravate sensitive skin. People with dry skin should use a moisturizer that provides long-lasting hydration. For combination skin, you may need to use a combination of different moisturizers on specific areas of your face. Individuals who are older or who have aging skin may opt for a moisturizer with anti-aging ingredients.

Use eye cream

Are you looking to prevent dark circles or puffiness under your eyes? How about crow's feet? Regular use of an eye cream can be the remedy to safeguard against all of these. Eye cream should be applied after you have used your moisturizer. Put it on in small dots around your eye, and then rub it in until it has been absorbed fully into the skin. There are several types of eye cream available that are designed to address the specific issues of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles under the eyes.
