Microneedling
Microneedling: What is it, what does it do, and how long does it last?
At GLOW Medical Spa, we want to help all of our patients in Redwood City and the Bay Area of California put their best face forward. To look your best, you also need to take care of your skin. GLOW Medical Spa can reverse the signs of aging and rejuvenate your skin through a microneedling procedure. Let's take a deeper look at the facts of microneedling: what it is, what purpose it serves, how long it lasts, and more.
What is microneedling?
Administered under the supervision of a physician like Dr. Paul Gorman and Dr. Renee Marshall at GLOW Medical Spa, microneedling involves using a device with fine needles that make small punctures in the top later of the skin—usually about 2 millimeters deep. The needles have been treated with a solution that combines vitamins and nutrients with an active ingredient. These small punctures stimulate the natural healing processes of your skin and, with it, the production of collagen, a protein that is crucial to keeping skin looking healthy and young. New collagen is created, resulting in skin that is plumper, thicker, and has less prominent scars, wrinkles, and fine lines. For this reason, microneedling also is referred to as collagen induction therapy—or C.I.T. for short.
What can microneedling do?
Microneedling can be used to address an assortment of different skin issues, including mild to moderate scarring from acne, the prominence of fine lines and wrinkles, pore size, and skin texture. Able to be performed on the body as well as the face, microneedling can be helpful in managing appearance issues related to surgical scars, keloid scars, and stretch marks. No matter what area of the body targeted, the end result of a microneedling treatment should be skin that looks young, beautiful, and vibrant!
Here's what you can expect during a microneedling procedure.
GLOW Medical Spa offers two types of microneedling treatments, the standard procedure described above and a variant that uses Platelet Rich Plasma. Also known as PRP, this provides greater stimulation of the natural healing properties and repair components of your skin. Drs. Paul Gorman and Renee Marshall also can oversee a specific PRP treatment that has been found successful in restoring areas of thinning hair.
How long does a microneedling procedure last?
Microneedling treatments can take place as often as every four to six weeks until the patient achieves the desired results. A typical course of microneedling entails at least three separate treatments, which are scheduled a minimum of four to six weeks apart. Microneedling intended to reduce the prominence of scars usually takes between three and six treatments. However, people who undergo microneedling usually start to see at least some visible results following their first appointment.
