One of the first places you’re likely to notice aging is in your cheeks. As your skin loses collagen, it also loses fullness. Nowhere is this more evident than in your cheeks.
Over time, your cheeks may start to look thinner, flatter and even sunken. As a result, the contour of your face may change altogether. Any other imperfections, like sagging around the eyes or lines around the nose, become much more pronounced as your cheeks loose volume.
Restoring volume to your cheeks can be complex, and it may require more than one type of procedure to get right. Here are some options to consider when thinking about cheek rejuvenation.
Adding volume to your cheeks can be most easily achieved by using a dermal filler like Juvederm Voluma, Restylane, or your own fat cells. Regardless of which product is used, the concept is the same. A skilled cosmetic surgeon injects the filler or the fat into the areas of your cheeks and midface that need definition and volume.
The biggest difference is the type of product used. Dermal fillers last for up to a year before another treatment is required. Using your own fat cells to add volume to your face offers a more permanent solution and eliminates fat from another part of your body. However, liposuction is required to harvest the fat cells, which are then purified and injected into your cheeks.
If sun damage is present on your face and cheeks, chemical peels or laser treatments can reduce the appearance of brown spots and discolorations. These treatments can certainly be done in conjunction with filler injections.
A dramatic rejuvenation can be achieved through face lift surgery. This surgery results in a tighter, more toned appearance that erases years from your face. Your cheeks will regain some of their youthful tone, but injectables may be required to add fullness. There are varying types of face lifts, some more invasive than others.
Another option is cheek implants. For people who aren’t satisfied with their bone structure or want a permanent solution, implants may be the answer. The result of implants will not be a “chiseled” appearance nor will they lift the lower face. Rather cheek implants should look soft and natural.
