Am I Too Old For Lip Fillers?

Written by GLOW Surgical Arts | October 23, 2017

Lip fillers are an extremely popular way to plump your pout. Your lips thin as you age, making you look older than you feel. Injectable fillers help restore lost volume, but many patients have questions about lip injectables. Questions usually center on injectable fillers' safety, but many patients ask if they're too old to have the treatment.

While lip injectables are quite popular among people in their 20s, 30s and 40s, there's no upper age limit for the treatment. In fact, older patients respond very well to lip injectables and find them to be a highly effective solution to age-related thinning lips. However, it may take more units of product to achieve results in older patients, especially if you have lots of lines around your mouth.

What types of lip injectables are available?

There are two types of injectables that can improve the appearance of your lips. First, artificial hyaluronic fillers help make your lips look fuller and more defined. These fillers last about a year, and most patients respond very well to the treatment. Fat transfers are another effective way to make your lips look more luscious. Fat is harvested from your body using liposuction, purified, and then injected into your lips for a natural, long-lasting result.

Will it look natural?

Contrary to popular belief, lip injectables provide a subtle improvement, not a jarring change. Most people won't even know you've had your lips treated. They'll just know you look more youthful and vibrant. Results are immediate and, depending on the type of injectable treatment, can last for years. If you don't like the results, the treatment with hyaluronic fillers can be reversed.

Will there be downtime?

Treatments with hyaluronic fillers can be performed quickly and painlessly in our office. There's no surgery, no anesthesia, and no downtime. You'll be able to return to your normal activities immediately after treatment. And while the procedure isn't painful, you can opt to use a local anesthetic to dull the pinch of the injections. Adding fat to increase lip volume does require taking fat from another area, and does require a little more planning. This is a minor procedure, though, and there is little to no downtime.

Regardless of the type of filler you choose, you will likely have some minor swelling, and potentially some light bruising, after your treatment.

Are there complimentary services?

Along with lip injectables, older patients might also consider other non-surgical treatments to enhance your complexion. Laser skin resurfacing or a chemical peel will smooth your skin and make your lips look even more youthful.
