Cheek Augmentation

Written by GLOW Surgical Arts | August 21, 2017

Wrinkles and fine lines aren't the only signs of aging that you'll notice on your face. Hollowness and sagging in your cheeks makes you look gaunt and can exacerbate the appearance of sunken eyes, nasolabial folds, large jowls or downturned lips.

Fortunately, there are several non-surgical ways to restore or add volume to your cheeks without resorting to a full facelift or cheek implants.

Radiesse

Radiesse is an injectable dermal filler that's made of calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. It can be used to add volume to areas of the face and/or contour asymmetrical areas or areas in need of definition.

Radiesse provides immediate results and since it promotes collagen production, the results can last for up to a year.

A very fine needle will be used to inject Radiesse into your cheeks. If needed, your cosmetic surgeon will smooth and contour the treatment area for the most pleasing result. The treatment takes less than 15 minutes, and you'll be able to return to your daily activities immediately.

Facial Fat Grafting

The loss of midface volume can also be improved by injecting your own body fat into your cheeks. Tiny amounts of fat will be harvested from your abdomen or thighs using a very small blunt-tipped cannula. The harvest sites will have very, very small incisions that will be closed with steri-strips after the procedure.

Next, contaminants and blood are removed from the fat, and it is injected into regions of the face that need definition and fullness. The result is a youthful, radiant appearance. However, the results are not immediate. It will take several months to see the full effect of the fat graft, but the results are considered permanent. Continued aging or weight loss may impact the appearance of the graft to an extent.

Fat grafting is quite versatile, too. The harvested fat can be used to add volume to the cheeks as well as camouflage dark undereye circles and improve your overall facial contour.

Voluma

Voluma is a hyaluronic acid filler that provides a smooth, natural looking result. Our bodies naturally make hyaluronic acid, which attracts water molecules and adds natural volume and lift to your face. Over time, your body doesn't make as much hyaluronic acid, thus contributing to the aging process.

A tiny needle is used to inject Voluma into areas that need definition, volume and lift. Voluma contains a numbing agent so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. Your face will be massaged during the treatment to ensure the product is distributed correctly. Results are immediately apparent and can last for up to two years.

It's impossible to know which option is right for you without consulting a cosmetic surgeon. He or she will discuss the merits of each treatment option so you can make an informed decision.
