What are the risks of a tummy tuck?
Tummy tuck surgery is generally very safe when it’s performed by a qualified surgeon. However, any surgical procedure has risks that should be discussed with your surgeon before you make your decision. Some of the possible complications may include infection, bleeding, fluid retention, poor healing of the incision, pain, and scarring. You should weigh these possible risks with the benefits of surgery to help you decide if the procedure is right for you. If you are having a tummy tuck performed by a skilled surgeon in a qualified medical setting, your overall risk of complications is low.
Tummy tuck scarring
After any surgical procedure, your body may have some scarring, but a skilled cosmetic surgeon will be able to minimize these issues. Some scarring may be inevitable, but your surgeon will place the incision in a very inconspicuous area that likely won’t be seen even in a bikini.
Some skin tones are more prone to scarring than others, but in general, most patients find that the overall improvement in the look of the abdominal area overshadows any scars. Over time, your scar will continue to diminish and fade. Taking good care of yourself after surgery will help your body develop the smallest scar possible. If you’ve already had a Cesarean section, your surgeon may be able to do your tummy tuck using the same incision to avoid a second scar. Your surgeon may recommend certain creams that can be applied to the scar, designed to minimize the scar’s look and feel.
