Botox Can Help Reduce Headaches In Addition To Wrinkles

Ever since Botox emerged onto the facial rejuvenation scene, women and men alike have used the treatment to help reverse signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. Now, a relatively new study is showing that Botox may also be able to help treat and reduce the occurrence of headaches and migraines.

The study, which was published in the Archives of Dermatology, involved a small group of 18 people. All 18 individuals frequently suffered from migraines they referred to as “imploding,” “ocular,” “exploding,” and “splitting.” The same individuals also had plans to undergo Botox treatment for purposes that were strictly cosmetic.

Within three months of receiving Botox injections, 13 of the 18 patients revealed that they experienced a major reduction in migraine pain. On average, the frequency of migraines decreased from 6.8 days per month to only 0.7 days per month as a result of having Botox. Although the decrease in migraine frequency was less drastic for the other five patients, they were still able to report an improvement in their symptoms.

Since previous medical trials have delivered inconsistent data in regards to how much Botox is needed to reduce or resolve migraines, the FDA has yet to approve marketing Botox as a medical treatment for chronic migraines. Additionally, researchers aren’t exactly sure how Botox helps treat migraines, but suspect it may be due to how the treatment has the ability to block sensory nerve signals located on the outside of the head that are normally responsible for causing migraines.

Botox is currently the most commonly used cosmetic injectable treatment for wrinkles and fine lines, and is associated with no major downtime. If you’re interested in reversing visible signs of aging on your face, and suffer from frequent or occasional migraine headaches, then Botox injections may be the most ideal treatment for you! However, keep in mind that at this time, Botox has not been officially approved for use by the FDA for treating headaches and migraines, and we cannot promise that the procedure will help reduce pain associated with these health conditions.
