How To Correct Asymmetrical Breasts

Breast asymmetry is common and normal among many women, and most cosmetic surgeons will admit that they rarely encounter patients who have breasts that are perfectly and naturally symmetrical. While having asymmetrical breasts isn’t considered a genetic deformity by any means, and causes no physical harm to the body, women often want to have their breasts “fixed” so they can experience fewer problems with finding bras, bathing suits, and clothing that fit comfortably and look flattering. Breast asymmetry can become a major issue for women if one breast has a different cup size than the other.

There are several different ways to correct asymmetrical breasts, depending on your personal goals and preferences. You can place an implant in the smaller breast, place different sized implants in both breasts, or have volume removed from the larger breast.

Correcting asymmetry through augmentation

If you’re looking to increase both breasts, or have an implant inserted into your smaller breast to make it bigger, you can correct asymmetry through breast augmentation. You can either opt for silicone implants, or saline implants -- the latter of which can be filled after they are inserted into your breasts, and could be more effective at correcting asymmetry since your surgeon can adjust the amount of saline solution that goes into the implants. At the time of your initial consultation, your surgeon will recommend the best option for you based on the size and appearance of your breasts.

Correcting asymmetry through reduction

If you want to reduce the size of your larger breast, breast reduction surgery may be your best solution. During breast reduction surgery, your surgeon will remove the necessary amount of excess breast tissue from the larger breast to match its size and appearance to your smaller breast.

Correcting asymmetry through combined procedures

If you’re looking for an overall improvement in the appearance of your breasts, you may want to consider combining a breast lift with either breast reduction or breast augmentation. For example, if your breasts are saggy, you can have a breast lift to improve the shape and contour of your breasts while also having excess breast tissue removed, or get saline or silicone implants through augmentation. The end result will be symmetrical breasts that have a more youthful appearance and shape. You could also consider breast fat transfer, in which fat tissue from other parts of your body are transferred to your breasts in place of implants.

Living with asymmetrical breasts before surgery

If you’ve made an appointment to have breast surgery to correct asymmetrical breasts, you may be feeling impatient, anxious, and frustrated about your breasts in the meantime. To even out your breasts and make them look more symmetrical in the days and weeks prior to surgery, wear bras with padding or lined cups. If one of your breasts is significantly larger than the other, insert pads into the cup of the smaller breast that contain water, gel, or silicone.
