Before the rise of the Internet and social media, many individuals were inspired to undergo cosmetic
Today, everyone from stay-at-home moms, to celebrities, to prime ministers are taking selfies and posting them on social media. Considering how popular this tech-driven trend has become, it’s not surprising that many are seeking plastic surgery for the sake of being able to take and share selfies that are more attractive.
Undergoing one or more cosmetic surgeries to improve your appearance can drastically improve and enhance your overall self-esteem and confidence. Being comfortable and happy with your physical appearance can often lead to better relationships, fewer problems with anxiety and depression, and even improved reputation and success in the workplace -- but only as long as you choose to have surgery to please yourself, and not a partner or another person.
A recent poll conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that one in three of its surgeon members experienced an increase in business as a result of patients wanting to improve their image on social media. The most popular procedures were rhinoplasty, hair transplants, and eyelid surgery -- each of which experienced increases of 10 percent, seven percent, and six percent, respectively.
One plastic surgeon in particular based out of Manhattan named Dr. Sam Rizk informed Reuters that the rise in selfies has resulted in a 25 percent increase in business. But despite the influx in business, Rizk sometimes informs patients that cosmetic surgery isn’t always necessary due to how selfies can sometimes come out distorted, and don’t always accurately represent how a person really looks.
Ramy Gafni, a makeup artist also based out of New York, says that some of his clients consult with him on makeup and skincare tips that can help produce the best selfies. Gafni suggests that selfie-takers use “clean” makeup techniques to enhance their eyebrows and add color to lips, and that features should be enhanced instead of completely transformed into something they’re not.
The most important factor to keep in mind when considering cosmetic surgery is that your expectation of the outcome must be realistic, and you must choose to undergo surgery to please yourself, and not another person.
