How To Prepare For Breast Augmentation Surgery

Making the decision to undergo breast augmentation is exciting, but can also be stressful if you’re not quite sure what to expect. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States, and has maintained the top position since 2006. Considering the popularity of the surgery, there’s no reason for you to stress or worry about your procedure, especially if you’re prepared for surgery and know what to expect.

Tips for the best surgical outcome

In most cases, your cosmetic surgeon will provide you with all the information you need to know about breast augmentation preparation and recovery well before the date of surgery. The guidelines you’ll be expected to adhere to may include the following:

  • Stop smoking as soon as you can prior to surgery. Smoking can increase the risk for complications during and after surgery, since it constricts blood flow and results in prolonged healing. Speak openly with your surgeon about your smoking habits, and join a smoking cessation program if needed.
  • Inform your surgeon of any medications and supplements you’re currently taking. Some medications may cause excess bleeding during surgical procedures.
  • Consume healthy foods and stop drinking alcohol in the days leading up to your breast augmentation surgery.
  • Exercise regularly to improve your overall health, but avoid engaging in high-intensity exercise the day prior to surgery.
  • Do not consume foods or liquids after midnight on the day before before your procedure.
  • Shower the night before, or the morning of your procedure using antimicrobial soap or body wash.
  • Do not apply cosmetics or beauty products after showering before your procedure, including makeup, lotion, deodorant, and moisturizers.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that open in the front such as a button-down shirt, as well as comfortable, flat slip-on shoes to your surgery.

Making personal arrangements prior to surgery

Since you’ll be administered anesthesia for your breast augmentation surgery, you’ll need to make transportation arrangements to and from the procedure. You may also want to ask for help and support from friends and family so they can be by your side during the first 24 hours following surgery.

If you are usually responsible for taking care of your children and preparing family meals, cook a few casseroles or dishes that can easily be heated up and served for the first few days after surgery. You’ll also want to make sure someone is available to take care of your children while you’re in surgery and recovering at home.

Consult with your surgeon about when you can resume normal everyday activities, such as driving a car, exercising, engaging in sexual intercourse, lifting heavy objects, and other activities that require you to use your arms and chest.

Lastly, talk to your surgeon about the list of items you’ll need to bring with you to breast augmentation surgery. In most cases, you’ll be required to bring your identification, necessary paperwork, and a bag for your medications.
