How Breast Implants Can Change Your Life

Breast augmentation is the top cosmetic surgery performed in the United States today, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. A number of studies have shown that breast implants can often help boost a woman’s body image and self-esteem, and even improve sex drive. Considering the positive nature of these changes, it’s not surprising why breast augmentation is such a popular surgery.

There are many different reasons you may be considering getting breast implants. A common perception surrounding breast implants is that women generally want bigger breasts for the sake of pleasing their partners. But on the contrary, most women will undergo breast augmentation to help correct asymmetrical breasts, or to return breasts to their former appearance after having given birth to one or more children. You may also want to undergo augmentation if your breasts are relatively small and fail to fill out bathing suits, tank tops, and dresses in the manner you prefer.

Laurie Casas, MD, an authoritative breast surgery specialist, says that almost half of her patients seek breast augmentation as a result of having a condition called micromastia, in which the breasts are never fully developed during puberty. Many of her other patients have major cup size differences between breasts, which can cause problems with finding clothing that looks and fits in an appropriate manner. Casas says that breast augmentation can often help correct what these women feel is a deformity of their bodies, and that getting symmetrical breasts through surgery helps them feel more normal.

If you’ve given birth to one or more children, you may already feel great about your overall appearance, but want your breasts to go back to the way they were prior to your becoming pregnant. In some cases, your breasts can appear deflated, especially if you’ve gained and lost weight repeatedly, and have breastfed multiple children.

Before agreeing to perform breast augmentation, most cosmetic surgeons will verify that their patients are completely realistic with their expectations. Their overall self-esteem should not depend wholly on breast augmentation surgery, and women should be doing the surgery to please themselves -- and not just to please their partners or to save their marriages.
