Is Eyelid Lift Surgery Right For You?

40 might be the new 20, but that doesn’t change the fact that as we age, our bodies change. That goes for our faces too, specifically the area around our eyes and eyelids. Maybe you have already noticed it. Bags under your eyes that make up can no longer hide. Droopy eyelids that having your friends ask if you are getting enough sleep. If our eyes are the mirror to our soul then there may be no area that reflects our age more then the facial skin around them. Although it may be inevitable it is also correctable with a relatively simple cosmetic surgery procedure known as blepharoplasty, or more simply, eyelid lift surgery.

Undergoing surgery around your eye may understandably make you a little anxious. Rest assured eyelid lift surgery is not a procedure that’s rare or one that’s going to take you out of commission for long. More than 200,000 blepharoplasty procedures are performed annually in the U.S., the surgery itself only takes a couple of hours and complications are rare. After receiving eyelid lift surgery at our GLOW’s Redwood City surgery office patients are able to go home shortly afterwards and sleep in their own bed that same night.

Things to keep in mind: eyelid lift surgery is minor, very safe and relatively quick, but the key word is “surgery.” Eyelid lift surgery. Your cosmetic surgeon will make incisions on your eyelids, allowing access to the excess skin, fat and muscle that might be causing the puffiness and droopy eyelids. The excess fat and skin will be removed and the incisions closed. There is typically some swelling and minor brusing immediately after the surgery. The resulting scars are very small and typically within a couple of months are nearly invisible. Soon after surger you look more rested and refreshed and often years younger. Still, there are risks to be aware of and if you’re a smoker, have uncontolled high blood pressure or a bleeding disorder you’ll want to share those issues with your cosmetic surgeon beforehand.

Now that you know blepharoplasty is a relatively straight forward cosmetic surgery procedure and one that’s quite popular in the U.S., the next question is: does eyelid lift surgery make sense for you?

While the answer is obviously a personal decision, the best candidates for eyelid lift surgery are adult men or women who have generally healthy facial tissue and muscles, but are unhappy with the appearance around their eyes. The typical eyelid lift surgery patient is frustrated with having "bags" under her eyes, looking tired and being unable to wear eye makeup. She wants to look younger, rested, like herself only better! The decision is ultimately yours, but if you need more information, have questions, or are simply looking for an honest assessment of what you can expect from blepharoplasty, schedule a free consultation with one of GLOW’s cosmetic surgeons. We’re happy to provide you with any information we can that will help you make the best decision possible.
