Botox Or Xeomin: What's The Difference?

Looking in the mirror is part of daily life. Most of us probably get our first peek at our own faces right after we get up, not exactly a state most typically look their best. That’s fine, because after the morning shower, makeup, there are numerous other chances to examine our faces reflecting back at us. So do you like what you see? After years of sun exposure and facial motions such s smiling, frowning, squinting and chewing your reflection probably has few features your aren't exactly thrilled about, namely, wrinkles. That is where the nueromodulator, botulinum toxin A comes in. Almost all of us have heard of the most well known botulinum toxin, Botox. More recently, Xeomin has been added to the option list as well when it comes to addressing those facial wrinkles we would rather not see.

Xeomin is newer to the scene than Botox, although they’re very similar. So how do you choose between the two? Lets start with how they are similar. Both Botox and Xeomin are FDA approved, non-surgical solutions to reducing facial wrinkles. Both work by blocking nerve impulses to facial muscles and allowing the overlying skin to relax. Both typically take full effect within a week and and last between 3 - 6 months. There are rarely complications with either product when injected by a trained medical professional. Bottom line: Both reduce wrinkles and improve that reflection you see in the mirror several times a day.

The differences are subtle. Xeomin, unlike Botox, doesn’t need to be refrigerated. That is probably something that will matter more to the cosmetic surgeon than the patient. Xeomin a has no additives, which may lessen the likelihood of a patient developing antibodies and preventing the injection of having its desired effect. Botox has been around longer and as a result has a longer safety record then Xeomin which is important to some patients.

That brings us back to the question of how to choose. Put simply, that’s something only you can decide after having a discussion with your cosmetic surgeon. Your cosmetic surgeon can review which injection makes the most sense for you, what kind of results you can expect, and help you make an informed choice. Ultimately, it’s your reflection in the mirror and it’s your choice as to how to deal with those wrinkles.

As with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks, but with Botox and Xeomin, they’re exceedingly rare and include minor bruising at the injection site. What matters is how you feel about the face looking back at you from the mirror in the morning. If there are wrinkles, forehead furrows or frown lines you’d like to get rid of, you can do it. You can be in and out of GLOW's Redwood City surgical offices in a matter of minutes, literally, and resume life as normal almost immediately. Results are usually seen within days and last for several months. Botox or Xeomin? That’s up to you, but a GLOW cosmetic surgeon can absolutely help you make the best decision for you.
